Self-exiled at the end of Cape Cod, our sandy hamlet of Provincetown transforms every December into a vibrant hub of celebration during its annual First Light festival. This multi-day event (running this year from 27 December 2024, through 01 January 2025) offers visitors and locals alike a chance to close out the year with fireworks, parties, and a distinct mix of quirky traditions only your Ptown can deliver.

What to Expect

Fireworks Over the Pier

The grand finale of First Light is the fireworks display over MacMillan Pier, scheduled for New Year’s Eve at dusk. Bundle up and find your spot on the beach for a view midwesterners would spoon their eyeballs out to enjoy … the singularly illuminated skies. Or do you prefer a cozier setting? Many restaurants and bars along the waterfront provide prime indoor viewing spots, complete with celebratory cocktails and small plates. See our running list of those HERE.

Lite Bright Bike Ride

On New Year’s Eve, Provincetown’s streets glow with our coveted brand of eccentricity on full display during the Lite Bright Bike Ride. Cyclists decorate their rides with colorful lights, weaving through the town’s winding roads in a luminous display of holiday cheer. It's a capture-worthy spectacle that holds the spirit of community and whimsy as long as you can hold a handful of sand. The ride starts at 7 PM at the Provincetown Inn, where the best-lit bikes assemble to light up the town.

Polar Bear Plunge

No New Year’s celebration is complete without daring this tradition. On 01 January, brave souls (and some of their peer-pressured friends) take an Arctic dip into the Atlantic during the Polar Bear Plunge. This invigorating start to the year is held on the beach near the pier and is a favorite among adventurous revelers.
Location: The plunge takes place just off the beach near MacMillan Pier, where the crowds gather at the edge of the water. Be ready for some icy waves, a lot of cheering, and possibly some icy stares from onlookers!
