Nauset Light, one of Cape Cod’s most photographed lighthouses, is located within the Cape Cod National Seashore and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Originally constructed in the late 1800s for Chatham, the lighthouse was relocated to Eastham in the early 1920s. To protect it from coastal erosion, it was moved again in the mid-1990s.

The Outer Beach, often called the "backside" of Cape Cod, has earned a grim reputation, claiming over 3,000 ships since the Sparrowhawk’s wreck in 1626. The heavy toll in lives and property led to the founding of the Massachusetts Humane Society in 1786, the nation's first organization dedicated to rescuing shipwrecked sailors. One of the initial nine lifesaving stations was built at Nauset.
