The 20th Annual Lighting of the Provincetown Lobster Pot Tree is a free event that will take place on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at 5:30 PM, in the heart of Lopes Square. Whether it’s rain or shine, this cherished celebration promises to warm your heart and light up your evening.

A Unique Holiday Tradition

The Provincetown Lobster Pot Tree isn’t your average Christmas tree. Built from over 120 lobster traps, this two-story-tall masterpiece celebrates the town’s maritime heritage while dazzling visitors with thousands of LED lights. The tree is adorned with festive decorations and colorful buoys, all contributed by local lobstermen and dedicated community members.

First envisioned in 2003 by the late Julian Popko (1938–2017), the Lobster Pot Tree has grown in both size and popularity over the years. What began as a small gathering with just 32 lobster traps and 20 passersby has evolved into a spectacular event that fills Lopes Square with joy and laughter.

This year’s tree is lovingly built by the Popko family and a team of volunteers, continuing Julian’s legacy of creativity and community spirit.

Festivities for All

The evening kicks off with a countdown as the entire tree comes to life, glowing with thousands of sparkling lights. Join in the caroling or simply soak up the festive atmosphere with friends and family. The event is not just a local treasure—it’s a global sensation, with thousands tuning in via live stream on www.provincetownview.com to watch the magic unfold.

After the lighting ceremony, the Lobster Pot Tree will shine nightly through February 20, 2025, making it a must-see for visitors throughout the winter season.

A Celebration of Art and Community

The Lobster Pot Tree is more than just a holiday decoration—it’s a testament to Provincetown’s rich cultural and artistic spirit. Julian Popko, a Polish immigrant and humble artist, infused his love for the Lower Cape into many iconic works, including the whimsical Bubbles the Whale sculpture and other public art installations near MacMillan Pier and the Chamber of Commerce office.

Why not make a weekend of it? Provincetown’s vibrant charm extends far beyond Lopes Square. Explore upscale dining, boutique shopping, and world-class art galleries during your stay.
