Halloween
A black and white image of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall dressed up for Halloween standing on a balcony with a cavern behind them, bats swooping, and a massive castle in the distance.

All Hallow’s Eve out here past the rotary isn’t a soiree at the Museums of Natural History. Not that everybody is tucked deep in the woods at Rob Zombie’s house - looking at you, Truro - but it’s a little saltier. As we like it. And there’s a little salt for everybody - it’s an all-ages shaker.

It becomes something all its own, once you’re past the Drive-In and two lanes turn to one … and the streetlights, whatever streetlights are left, have a habit of maybe not working so well. Or at all. On a night just like this one. On Halloween.

Town by town, Witch by Clown, the Pumpkins’re up-Cape, the Bears are down.

Orleans

Rumored to be the most haunted place on Cape Cod, Orleans holds a brothel that’s been collecting ghosts dating back to the 1920s when an … employee was killed there. Later, a bartender hung himself in the cupola. In the 70s a dishwasher died in the basement … by hanging. So while there’s a nifty little book about it, who knows if the place isn’t amassing a platoon to set loose on the beaches next summer. Oh that brother site? The Orleans Waterfront Inn.

Chatham

The good news is that Chatham is very well heeled and doesn't have any ghost stories to spook you. They do have the Grey Ghost but that was only a massive abandoned rooming house dating back to the pre-electricity days. Scores of homeless would squat there and wander the halls and up to the top floor with their candles and lanterns. Probably in high spirits, probably all in good fun, probably not scary people at all. Not malnourished and looking for an edge to get over on anyone in the house, not borderline zombies just yards away from the road where innocents walked ... nope, nothing to fear in Chatham.

Local author, Corey Farrenkopf, share more on his new release Living in Cemeteries. Through Q+A, we will discuss Corey's reading and writing Horror/Dark Fantasy Fiction process. • 31 Oct, 2-3p: Searching for the Lady of the Dunes @ Eldredge Public Library
For nearly fifty years, the Lady of the Dunes was Cape Cod’s most enduring mystery. Found savagely murdered and mutilated in the remote dunes of Provincetown in 1974 it seemed her identity would be forever unknown. In 2022 she was finally identified as Ruth Marie Terry. This book pulls the curtain back on the Wild West that was Provincetown in the 1960s and 1970s thanks to those who were there at the time. It was written in conjunction with a documentary that helped shine a new light on the case. It is the full in-depth story behind the arduous journey from the Lady of the Dunes to Ruth Marie Terry.
